Welcome fellas to a new interview from The Poyo Reporter!
Poyo!:
Today we're interviewing KingPoss, the master of KP Radio.
Poyo!:
Welcome. KingPoss to The Poyo Reporter!
KingPoss:
Hello, and thanks for having me!
Poyo!:
No, thank you for coming with us. :D So, to get started, what is KP Radio?
KingPoss:
KP Radio is an internet radio station I created about 2 years ago on my personal site. It's slowly developed into a space to showcase old tracker/chiptune music and indie musicians from around the net! We also have live broadcasts and interviews, as well as guest DJs now
Poyo!:
Wow, that's very cool. My parents taught me a long time ago that the local Radio played the same songs because of Copyright and Rights. Do you struggle getting new songs due to these reasons?
KingPoss:
Luckily it hasn't been nearly as big of an issue as I originally thought starting the station. Since I'm often contacting artists directly, and most don't have contracts with restrictive labels. There's also a lot of artists that choose to release their songs under Creative Commons, essentially making them royalty free, as anyone can do anything they want with them!
Poyo!:
That's awesome!
Poyo!:
What kind of artists does your radio play?
KingPoss:
Genre has never been as important to me as how enjoyable the music is, so we've got electronic of all types, alt rock/math rock, ambient, lo-fi, rap, metal, r&b, and experimental artists that fit somewhere in-between.
Poyo!:
Honestly I agree with you. I never stick to any genre, I just listen to the songs I like.
Poyo!:
And I wonder, how do you approach artists to get songs?
KingPoss:
Most artists have their contact information somewhere around their work, so I've reached out via twitter/discord/email, even through a youtube comment. I'm also in a few musician discord servers where people post their work, so I'm often looking and reaching out through there too.
Poyo!:
What's the greatest deal you got?
KingPoss:
Its hard to say! Alot of these artists have their pieces either free to download, or available on bandcamp under "name your price", and I enjoy supporting artists/musicians regardless, so I like buying their stuff if they have that option available
Poyo!:
Oh dope. Now let's touch the most interesting topic for our nerdy readers, how does it work?
KingPoss:
It's built on Azuracast--it's this open source broadcasting suite that basically brings together a bunch of individual audio/broadcasting tools into one big package. I have a web portal I can log into to manage it, and also use FileZilla to upload music. When it comes to my live broadcasts, I use Mixxx to DJ and transition tracks into each other.
Poyo!:
OoooOOo I'll check it out. Last question, do you have fun DJing?
KingPoss:
I have a lot of fun! It's great! I really enjoy getting a setlist together, figuring out how each song can flow into the next. I try not to just play music, I'll do spoken word segments, read a little poetry, read out some fake funny ads i've written. Running the station and doing my live broadcasts really gives me life. I love it.
Poyo!:
Oookay! So that's been everything for today. I had such a great time. Hope to see you again in The Poyo Reporter!
KingPoss:
I had great time too! thanks again, and I'll definitely be around!
